Termite baiting is a perceived truth based on information from the companies that manufacture termite baits. The science behind it cannot and never will be proven and therefore remains only supported by those that sell it. It's like the man's face on the surface of the planet Mars. What it appears to be and what it really is are two different things. But no one can prove one way or the other. Its all in perception.
The use of Chitin Inhibitors (ie - Sentricon, Exterra and Outpost) to control termites has come under severe scrutiny by pest control industry experts.
Here are the facts - Since Chitin Inhibitors only effect the immature termites which only make up 20% of the colony, 80% of the colony including queens, reproductives, soldier and mature workers are not effected. Given these facts, the effects of Chitin Inhibitors and the age of termite populations have a close relationship. If total elimination of 20% of the colony (immature workers) were to take place, then the other 80% would survive until death, which would take at least 6 years.
There is enough research by major universities to substantiate termite population reduction in a controlled setting. However, it has also been proven that subterranean termite workers can live up to 6 years. (Gold Texas A&M).
The mathematics of this conclusion are that it would take at least 6 years to achieve population control given the use of a Chitin Inhibitor, sufficient consumption by the immature workers to cause death, the declining population of mature workers, soldiers and reproductives, etc. This leaves the entire use of Chitin Inhibitors in question as to their efficacy related to termite baiting.
My opinion is that termite baiting should involve a material that kills the termite or termites that ingest it, regardless of their gender or social order. A termite bait should kill all termites that feed on it. That is why I recommend Terminate or Firstline brand termite baits. These products contain a metalbolic inhibitor not growth inhibitor. Metabolic inhibitors kill the termites that feed on it.
